Prague is the capital and largest city in the Czech Republic . It has been the political, cultural, and economic centre of the Czech state for more than a millennium. It is located on the river Vltava, about 100 south of the border with Germany. Almost two million people live in Prague with hundreds of thousands visitors annually.
Quite similarly to Paris, the city is divided in 22 “quarters” or “districts” arranged in a seashell manner. The most central parts are Prague 1 to Prague 3; Prague 4 to 8 are the next ‘layer’ covering the innermost circle. Not only numbers but names are used to signify important parts of the city. Karlin is a green area rich in parks about 15 minutes traveling from Prague 1. Vysehrad with its famous castle is identified with Prague 10, a peaceful and safe part of the city. Mala Strana, or the ‘lesser quarter’ is situated on the west side of the Vltava River. It is a very popular place with tourists, as the Prague Castle, Petrin Hill and various buildings with unique architecture are located there. The Prague Zoo, voted 5th best zoo in the world, attracts thousands of visitors each day. However, the most famous part of the capital of the Czech Republic is undoubtedly the Stare Meste, or Old Town, with its remarkable Astronomical clock, rivaled only by the historic Wencelas Square.
Prague is extremely popular with visitors for several reasons. There are plenty of sights to see in this beautiful city, perfectly blending old-fashioned charm and modern technology. The transport system is well-developed and includes metro, trams, a funicular servicing Petrin Hill and 5 ferries. All services have a common ticketing system, allowing for even easier access to all parts of Prague. The city can be reached by motorways, the rail or by air. The Ruzyně International Airport is the biggest airport in the Czech Republic and one of the busiest in Central and Eastern Europe and is used by national and budget airlines alike. Prague has two international railway stations, Hlavní nádraží and Praha-Holešovice.
With over 50,000 beds in hotels offered to visitors, Prague is one of the most tourist-friendly place in Europe. There is a place for everyone, regardless of their taste, budget or the purpose of their visit. Private accommodation is also easily arranged as many landlord offer their apartments for short term rentals at affordable prices. The diversity may make it a difficult choice for those who have never been in Prague and thus is best to get detailed information on all details to be taken into consideration when making a reservation for the stay in the city.
